Jags DE Davis not getting complacent

Published Jul. 14, 2015 2:28 p.m. ET

After a season in which he established himself with 6.5 sacks, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Ryan Davis is far from satisfied.

“I think there is still a lot more to be written, if you ask me,” Davis said, via the Florida Times-Union. “In no way, shape or form am I complacent with where I’m at or what I was able to do in the past.”

A former undrafted free agent out of Bethune-Cookman, Davis has overcome concerns whether he lacked the size to play defensive end in the NFL, provide pressure from both the edge and interior of the line. After recording just one sack his first two seasons, the 26-year-old broke out last year.

“The thing with Ryan is a lot of people don’t watch film or don’t care to look at the guys who aren’t big names. But around here, we know Ryan is good,” defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks told the Times-Union. “He understands himself and understands exactly what you want from him in every situation. I think Ryan is special.”

With the season-ending injury to third overall draft pick Dante Fowler, Jr., Davis knows he will be expected to help fill the pass-rushing void.

“Dante was going to be a great help for us, but I knew what my role on this team was going to be,” Davis said. “My mind-set has always been to elevate my level of play every year. I’m going to come in and be in great shape, and from the mental aspect, my expectation is to come out and be better than last year.”
