Is it time for Jets to worry about Muhammad Wilkerson?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson of the New York Jets hasn’t been the same this season. However, it’s not anything to truly worry about in the grand scheme of things.

So far this season, defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson isn’t having the same defensive impact. In 2016 with the New York Jets, Wilkerson has totaled 17 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and three passes defended. The truth of the matter is, while many might be worried he’s not playing up to par of his new offseason contract, it’s not really about that.

Wilkerson has been dealing with rehabbing his ankle injury. It’s not easy to come back from a broken leg injury and now an ankle issue on top of it but the Jets are wise to limit him. He might be in limited series from here on out but it’s for the best interests of his continued career.

Through the first quarter of the regular season, Wilkerson was playing the majority of reps which could have led to his ankle not healing up properly. Wilkerson also missed Week 7 due to not being able to play through the lingering pain.

It’s not really anything significant to worry about since he should be good to go as the season progresses. With some important games coming up over the next few weeks over subpar teams, the Jets will need him to continue being a defensive force.

With the Miami Dolphins and the Los Angeles Rams coming up, it’s the perfect time for him to really have a major impact. If he can continue bringing some pressure against opponents, the Jets might very well build a nice winning streak.

Overall, there is nothing really to worry about. Wilkerson is coming off a broken leg injury/surgery and now a lingering ankle issue. Time heals all and once he gets back to 100%, should be back to his old dominating defensive ways.
