HOF WR Tim Brown: Odell Beckham Jr. reminds me of myself

Published Jul. 7, 2015 10:23 a.m. ET

Former Oakland Raiders wideout Tim Brown was one of the best wide receivers to ever play the game. He never played with Hall of Fame, or even consistent Pro Bowl quarterbacks, but his unique speed and quickness in and out of his breaks made him nearly impossible to stop. This August, he will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

It takes a lot to impress Brown, but when the soon-to-be Hall of Famer was asked about which current NFL wide receiver reminds Brown of the way he played, he immediately thought of New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

“Odell Beckham Jr. is probably a freakish type athlete,” said Brown, to Armen and Levack, on 104.5 The Team. “[He's] probably not as fast as I was but obviously has some incredible intangibles about him and some things that I couldn’t possibly do. I’ve never been able to pull off a three-finger catch before.

“His route running ability and ability to make plays after the catch is what I love about this kid. I love watching him play. I love that part of the game. I think he’s super exciting and he’s a guy that I can’t wait to watch him play this year.”

Brown was asked about how Beckham can keep his mind straight and block out all of the hype in order to ascend to an even higher level.

“Don’t change what you’ve been doing," Brown said. "Stay normal and keep plowing away. If he can do that, he can come back and have just as good of year as he had the year before."

Receiving praise from Tim Brown has to feel good, but hopefully Beckham will also listen to Brown's advice on staying great. The 2014 Rookie of the Year has received a lot of attention this offseason, but he will need to put that all behind him when the Giants begin training camp later this month.
