Green Bay Packers Found Themselves a Bell-Cow
On the way trying to get in the playoffs this season, the Green Bay Packers made a discovery. Ty Montgomery, the team’s 2015 third-round pick wasn’t helping much as a receiver. However, he is showing that he has what it takes to be a bell-cow back.
Ty Montgomery entered his 2014 season as a first-round receiver prospect for 2015. But he had a disappointing season that year, dropping him out of the first two rounds altogether. At the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine, this writer, a running back fan, got a little irritated.
Montgomery ran a disappointing 4.5 40 while showing up at 5’11”, 221 pounds at the combine. And this writer said, “This is why the NFL has devalued the running back position so much. All the good athletes with a running back’s strength and build are playing receiver now.!
Montgomery came back from his disappointing 4.5 40 at the combine with a 4.38 at his pro day. He played some running back at Stanford, showing good power and elusiveness. He always had the makings of a great bell-cow back.
More from With the First Pick
When the draft came, the Packers took him in the third round and kept him at receiver. And in his first year and some change, Montgomery didn’t do very much. But after starting running back Eddie Lacy went on IR, he saw spot duty there.
Then backup running back James Starks sustained a concussion, forcing Montgomery to play there more. And from the looks of this, his talent at the position will force him stay there permanently. At least that’s what his day against the Chicago Bears Sunday showed.
He showed the vision to find holes along the line of scrimmage to go with his speed, power, and elusiveness. And his experience as a receiver means he doesn’t have to come off the field on third down. He had 16 carries for 162 yards and two touchdowns.
And those touchdowns showed he can get it done in short yardage.
Last time I checked, that’s a bell-cow!
Eddie who?
It’s time to give Montgomery a new number!
