Giants' Schwartz: Cruz's return will boost the run game
The New York Giants have struggled to find consistency with their rushing attack through the first three weeks of the season, but right guard Geoff Schwartz believes that will change now that wide receiver Victor Cruz is back in the mix.
“Some of our issues are that we’ve had the safety down a lot in the run game,” said Schwartz, to ‘Armen and Levack’ on 104.5 The Team. “If you put [Cruz] in that slot, the safety is not going to be down as much in the run game because they have to honor our slot receiver. Having him back will be a great boost for our offense."
Of course, Cruz's return will not only pay dividends for the Giants' run game. Cruz adds another weapon for Eli Manning and the passing game. Odell Beckham Jr. has seen bracket coverage quite often so far in 2015, but that could change with Cruz back in the mix.
“To add a Pro Bowl caliber player into your offense can really help. Especially in the slot, who are you going to cover? You can cover Odell, you can cover [Reuben Randle], you can cover [Cruz], you can cover [Larry Donnell].”
Cruz claims that he will be returning to action in Week 4, but the Giants have not confirmed anything yet. Stay tuned for more updates as the practice week rolls along.
