Giants Open Up As Big Underdogs Against Steelers

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The New York Giants are currently riding a six game winning streak. Count the Las Vegas oddsmakers as unimpressed. New York opened up this week as big underdogs against a very ordinary Pittsburgh Steelers squad.

According to VegasInsider.com, the New York Giants opened up as a six point underdog to the Pittsburgh Steelers next Sunday. Currently the Steelers hold a mediocre 6-5 record, while the Giants have won six consecutive games.

Included in the Giants eight wins on the season are three opponents who have beaten Pittsburgh already this year. That list includes: the Philadelphia Eagles (34-3), the Baltimore Ravens (21-14) and the Dallas Cowboys (35-30).

The under-over for the contest goes from a low of 47 points to a high of 48.5 points.

The spread highlights the skeptical view of the Giants around the league. Many believe that their 8-3 record is a mirage; mostly a function of a favorable schedule. On the other side, Pittsburgh has won two in a row, after a four-game winning streak.

According to CBS Sports on Nov. 28, 2016, “The Steelers’ division has gone a horrible 1-11-1 in 13 games against the NFC East this year, which includes a 1-2 mark by the Steelers and 3-0 mark by the Giants.” Apparently the oddsmakers will not let the facts get in the way of their narrative.

Favorites Or Underdogs?

According to TeamRankings.com, Big Blue is 6-4-1 overall against the spread, with a 1-1-1 record as a road underdog. Keep in mind that the Giants are a perfect 3-0 in non-conference games in 2016. The G-Men did not cover as a 7-point road underdog to the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 9th. Green Bay won the game 23-16 on “Sunday Night Football”.

Ironically, Pittsburgh has been favored in every game this season, except for one. The Black and Gold was a 7.5 point underdog against the New England Patriots on Oct. 23rd. New England won that contest 27-16 at Heinz Field.

Maybe the oddsmakers are a little too deferential to the Steelers. Pittsburgh was also favored by three points against the Dallas Cowboys three weeks ago. The Cowboys defeated Pittsburgh 35-30 in an epic battle.

Undoubtedly, the final score of this contest will clarify the status of both the Giants and Steelers moving forward.
