Giants K Josh Brown reveals the reason he was suspended

Published Aug. 18, 2016 3:39 p.m. ET

Josh Brown received a one-game suspension from the NFL this week for violating its personal conduct policy, and the New York Giants kicker released a statement protesting the decision.

On Thursday, Brown revealed the reason for his suspension, and why he felt it was undeserved.

Brown confirmed to reporters that his suspension stemmed from a May 2015 arrest on a domestic violence charge. He said he only grabbed his wife by the wrist and that the charge was dismissed, though he and his wife have since divorced.

The King County (Wash.) Prosecutor's office confirmed to The Associated Press that the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence.

Brown said he immediately informed the Giants of the arrest and the NFL informed him of its decision this past June. He said he filed an appeal but it was denied.

Per NFL rules, a player accused of domestic violence can be suspended whether he's charged or not.

“My major concern is my three kids and the things that are put out there and the things that are being said," Brown told reporters. "This moment happened over a year ago. The case was dropped five days after the moment happened. We’ve moved on with our lives at this point. While I’m not OK with the decision, I have to respect it. So I look forward to a 15-game season and moving forward with my teammates.”

Brown will miss the Giants' season opener at Dallas.

"I'm going to spend it with my daughter," he said. "I'm going to go home and take her to school and be a dad and do the things that I need to do, that I get the opportunity to do because of this. Take that as an opportunity I've never had as a player, to take my daughter to school on the first day. I'm looking forward to that."

Brown, 37, made his first Pro Bowl this past season and signed a two-year, $4 million contract in April.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
