Giants GM Jerry Reese: We are going to pick the best player at No. 9
New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese has earned a reputation for bypassing team needs to select the best player regardless of position. When the Giants drafted Odell Beckham Jr. in the 2014 NFL Draft, many observers questioned the selection. At the time, the Giants seemed much more stable at wide receiver than they were on the offensive line, at linebacker, tight end, safety, or even along the defensive line. None of that mattered to Reese. He achieved his goal to get the best football player that was available to them.
Although the team enters Thursday's draft with several glaring needs again, don't expect Reese's strategy to change.
“We want to try and upgrade every position as best we can every opportunity we get,” general manager Jerry Reese said at his pre-draft press conference. “Whoever the best player is at nine – we are going to pick (him),” Reese said.
Keeping every position free in every round is probably a good idea for teams that want to maximize their chances of landing a great football player. Over the last two drafts, this strategy has worked out very well. The Giants have landed several impact starters including Odell Beckham Jr., Jonathan Hankins, Justin Pugh and Devon Kennard. Damontre Moore, Weston Richburg and Cooper Taylor will all compete for starting jobs in 2015 as well.
Giants team president John Mara believes that this upcoming draft is key for the team's chances of improving immediately.
“We have had two very strong drafts in a row,” Mara said. “We need to have another one.”
Over the next three days, the Giants will have every opportunity to do so.
