Giants' defense under Steve Spagnuolo is establishing an aggressive nature

There is a lot of buzz and excitement coming out of OTAs among the New York Giants' defensive players. Everyone is excited about the new defensive scheme that defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has introduced. After several seasons in a row of playing in a read and react style defense under former coordinator Perry Fewell, the Giants are getting back to an aggressive and attacking style under Spagnuolo.

The Giants signed linebacker Jonathan Casillas to compete for a role on special teams and potentially at linebacker as well. On Giants Insider, Casillas talked about how Spagnuolo is stressing an attacking culture as the first order of business.

“So far, the culture is being established here,” Casillas said on Giants Insider. “Everybody running after the ball, and every loose ball is being picked up and returned. You have to get into that [scoop and score]mindset. You know schemes are important, definitely, but the culture you establish associated with the schemes are more important.”

Earlier this week, middle linebacker Jon Beason also talked about the complexity and aggressive style of the defense.

"It's my fifth defensive coordinator and it's more complex because we will not sit back and be dictated to by anybody," Beason told Ross Tucker and David Diehl on Sirius XM's Opening Drive.

"It's a great system because we're going to be aggressive and we're going to be ready for whatever an offense does," Beason said. "So I'm looking forward to it."

Spagnuolo's aggressive style will hopefully invigorate a pass rush that has deteriorated since the Giants won the Super Bowl in 2011.
