Gary Kubiak wants zero funny business at Broncos-49ers practices
Gary Kubiak has already proven he'll start a practice over if his team gets too pushy.
With another squad in town, the new head coach is putting his Broncos roster on double-secret probation.
“I would like everybody to quit talking about it, to be honest with you,” Kubiak told Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post in advance of a visit from the San Francisco 49ers. “I want players to worry about playing and getting ready to play the game. … I expect us to practice hard, practice and get better next week, just like we did this week.”
All eyes will be on the joint Niners-Broncos sessions whether Kubiak likes it or not. NFL camps have turned into UFC octagons this offseason; from the Rams-Cowboys duel to a skirmish between the Texans and Redskins, fisticuffs are flying.
The Broncos have a history of training camp brawls when these types of dual practices are scheduled, according to Jhabvala. In 2008, Ryan Clady tussled with future teammate DeMarcus Ware. Last season, Chris Clark and J.J. Watt nearly fought.
Kubiak's message is a clear one. No fights are to be tolerated whatsoever.
“You hear about the joint practices and people fighting and people getting hurt — you just got to be smart,” running back C.J. Anderson said. "We’ll be smart in what we do."
