Fantasy Football Start or Sit Week 1: Ryan Fitzpatrick

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

For Week 1 Fantasy Football action, owners should sit quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick of the New York Jets as he’s going to be very rusty heading into Week 1.

The New York Jets made it their focus to re-signing quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick this past offseason. It wasn’t easy but in the final hour, a deal was made to bring him back to the tune of a one-year deal worth $12M. When it comes to his fantasy football value heading into his Week 1 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, the results won’t be pretty.

Fitzpatrick has never exactly screamed consistency when it comes to his fantasy points. It’s similar to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde where one week Fitzpatrick will shine and the next, he’s coughing up three interceptions faster than a New York minute.

Fantasy owners should be wary of starting Fitzpatrick this week considering he looked incredibly rusty throughout the preseason. His contract stalemate with the Jets caused him to miss organized team activities and most of the Jets’ training camp. Even though he was able to play in a few games, will have a tough time shaking off the rust against the Bengals.

Of course, Fitzpatrick is s savvy veteran heading into his twelfth season in the NFL but will need a few games in to establish a rhythm. Even though most of the supporting cast is back for the upcoming season on offense, last season the Jets had a huge offensive year which boiled down to having an easy schedule.

The Bengals are one of the better teams in the NFL.

They have also upgraded their defense and overall pass rush for 2016 ready to bring it to Fitzpatrick and his partners in crime.

Fitzpatrick will more than likely have a tough time adjusting to the complex defensive schemes coming his way that will pressure him into making costly mistakes.

Fantasy owners should easily sit Fitzpatrick this week since it’s not a favorable matchup to feel confident enough to start him.

While Fitzpatrick will more than likely have at least a touchdown or two thanks to the Jets’ wide receiving corps, he’ll also have quite a few interceptions. Keep in mind the Jets will look for their stout defense and rushing attack to be the two main strengths to have a shot at leaving this Week 1 matchup victorious.

Overall, sit Fitzpatrick this week and find another quarterback who is projected to have much better results. At least for this week, the odds are against Fitzpatrick in having a huge game due to a Bengals’ defense ready to make a statement.
