Falcons extend Dimitroff's contract

Published Mar. 9, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

Green Bay's Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy aren't the only successful general manager/head coaching duo to receive an offseason contract extension.

A source told FOXSports.com that Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff signed a mutliyear contract extension Wednesday. Further details weren't immediately available.

FOXSports.com's NFL insider Jay Glazer reported in late January that the Falcons planned to discuss extensions for both Dimitroff and head coach Mike Smith.

Under the guidance of Dimitroff and Smith — who received his extension last month — Atlanta has posted winning records for a franchise-record three straight seasons. More impressive is the fact that both men have had instant success since joining the Falcons in 2008.

The Falcons finished with an NFC-best 13-3 record this past season before suffering a divisional-round playoff loss to Green Bay.

Coming off the Michael Vick debacle in 2007, Dimitroff has helped rebuild the Falcons through shrewd drafts and free-agent signings. Quarterback Matt Ryan, running back Michael Turner and cornerback Dunta Robinson are three of the top players acquired during his tenure.
