Eagles release veteran WR Avant, save $4 million in cap space

A week after the Eagles gave wide receivers Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin contract extensions, the front office has decided to part ways Jason Avant, the team announced Tuesday.

Avant, who played eight seasons in Philly, was due a $1 million roster bonus in the coming weeks and the move will save the team nearly $4 million in salary cap space.

“There’s no question that releasing a player like Jason is one of the toughest parts of the job,” general manager Howie Roseman said in a team release. “It’s a tough day when you have to say goodbye to player who you have so much respect for. I can’t thank him enough for the leadership, the big plays and the positive impression he made on so many of his teammates.”
