Eagles' Maxwell: I was signing with whoever gave me the most money

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Byron Maxwell is not afraid to speak his mind. Earlier this offseason, he talked about his school teachers down south used to take his class on field trips to old slave auction sites. Last week, he admitted point blank that his decision to sign with the Eagles came down to the bottom line.

“To be honest with you, I was going to whoever gave me the most money,” Maxwell said per Phil Sheridan of ESPN. “I know people don’t like to hear that, but that’s the truth.”

There was talk earlier last week about Maxwell moving around the formation in Monday night's regular season opener to shadow Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones. Although Jones is the Falcons' most dynamic weapon, it doesn't look like he will draw Maxwell in coverage on every snap.

“I think I’m going to stick to a side,” Maxwell said. “If I had to follow him, I’ve played inside, I’ve played both sides. It wouldn’t be a problem.

“I think the best defenses have guys play one side,” Maxwell said. “They’ve got two great corners. That’s ideal. That’s probably the best.”

The Eagles' pass defense gave up big plays on a consistent basis in 2014. The hope is that Maxwell will be a major catalyst in the defensive turnaround in 2015.
