Eagles CEO is working hard to revive these awesome throwbacks

Throwback uniforms are great. Fans love them, and players seem to really enjoy wearing them on a very limited basis. The NFL has tried to give teams the chance to wear alternates through the Color Rush program, but they’re not the same as classic throwbacks.

Eagles CEO Jeffrey Lurie is trying to change that, beginning with his team.

Ahead of the owner meetings, the Eagles proposed that teams should be allowed to wear an alternate helmet, which could match a potential third jersey color. The reason behind the proposal was to bring back Kelly green uniforms, which are fantastic.

The Eagles rescinded the idea, knowing it wouldn’t pass, but Lurie remains active in trying to make this happen.

"I want to see us use Kelly green as our alternate and Thursday night-type of uniform. The only thing blocking us is we can't get the Kelly green helmet yet. That's what we're waiting for," Lurie said. "We're going to keep pushing at it. ... My hope is that we'll be able to get it done by next March."

Part of the reason teams don’t wear throwback uniforms is because they don’t have a helmet to match them. Imagine the Eagles wearing Kelly green with dark green helmets. Yuck.

The league requires players to wear one helmet all season due to safety concerns, citing the fact that helmets take time to break in. That won’t stop Lurie from pushing to get alternate helmets passed, though.

"We're going to keep at it because we're really determined. ... I would love to see it. The sooner the better," Lurie said.

Lurie wouldn’t say whether he would want Kelly green to be the Eagles’ primary uniform, saying he wants to try it as an alternate first. He loves their current midnight green color, but he’d like to add another jersey to their repertoire.
