Eagles at Lions Week 5: Highlights, score and recap
Everything you need to see and know from this NFL Week 5 game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions.
The great play of Eagles’ rookie quarterback Carson Wentz has arguably been the biggest story in the NFL this season. Wentz has been incredible this year, completing nearly 65% of his passes for 769 yards and five touchdowns. He has yet to throw an interception.
Wentz has led the Eagles to a surprising 3-0 start to the season. Coming off of a bye, Wentz and the Eagles will now travel to the heartland to take on the 1-3 Detroit Lions.
Matthew Stafford and the Lions’ offense have played well for most of the year. That being said, their defense has been pretty bad. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah and linebacker DeAndre Levy have both missed the last couple of games for Detroit. They are the Lions’ best two defensive players and are also listed as out for this game.
Wentz and the Eagles’ offense should be able to move the ball at will in this one. Running back Ryan Mathews is healthy and expected to be a full go in this game, as is tight end Zach Ertz.
With a full arsenal of weapons at his disposal, Wentz could be in for a big game.
Allowing a league-best nine points per game this season, the Eagles’ defense has been incredible. That being said, the Lions’ offense can move the ball as well. Marvin Jones has been one of the most productive receivers in the NFL this season, and the best way to attack the Eagles’ defense is on the edge.
This will not be an easy game for Stafford and company, but they are a potentially explosive unit who can make noise against anybody. With two strong offenses, will this game turn into a shootout?
Highlights for this game will be provided as they happen.
Three Stars
These are the three players who I expect to have the biggest impact on this game.
1. Carson Wentz
Perhaps a bit obvious here, but I fully expect Wentz to play well in this one. He has been great this season, is coming off of a bye and is facing a weak Lions’ offense. The Eagles’ rookie quarterback can attack the defense in a variety of ways and I have a hard time believing that Detroit will be able to slow him down.
Expect a big day out of Wentz.
2. Marvin Jones
With 23 receptions for 482 yards and three touchdowns, Marvin Jones has been incredible for the Lions this season. He is the second-leading receiver in the NFL and has not shown any signs of slowing down.
Jones is obviously the biggest weapon on the Lions’ offense, and Stafford has been looking to him early and often. He has been dealing with a bit of a foot injury, but I fully expect Jones to suit up and play well in this game.
The Eagles’ defense is great, but their biggest weakness on that side of the ball is at cornerback. Attacking the Eagles on the edge is the best way for the Lions to move the ball here. Expect a big game out of Jones.
3. Brandon Graham
Eagles defensive end has been great this season. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has relied on Graham to take on a more full-time role, and he has responded in a big way. Graham has created consistent pressure on the passer and has piled up three sacks on the year.
The Lions have not been awful in pass protection, allowing 10 sacks on the season. That being said, their pass protection at the tackle position leaves plenty to be desired. Rookie Taylor Decker has been okay, but he is exploitable on the left side. Right tackle Riley Reiff is a great run blocker, but he does struggle at times in pass protection.
Graham will have an opportunity to make a huge impact in this game, and I fully expect him to take full advantage.
Next Week
In Week 6, the Eagles will take on their division rival Washington Redskins, while the Lions will play host to the Los Angeles Rams.
