PLANT CITY - More than halfway through the season, two of the five Plant City Dolphins youth football teams are undefeated.
Two more have only one loss, and Saturday provides the chance to avenge those as the Dolphins visit the East Bay Bucs in Gibsonton.
Play begins at 9 a.m. with the Flyweight game for 6- and 7-year-olds. The varsity game for 12- to 14-year-olds, the last to kick off, is at 4:30 p.m.
In Week 2 of the season, Aug. 28 at Mike Sansone Community Park, the East Bay Super Midget team for 7- and 8-year-olds beat Plant City 27-6, and the Flyweight Dolphins lost 32-13. Outside of those losses, both of those Dolphins squads are 5-1 for the year.
And most of those wins have been easy, although both teams won by only a single touchdown against Brandon on Sept. 18.
The Dolphins Midget team for 9- and 10-year-olds and junior varsity team for 11- and 12-year-olds are a perfect 6-0.
"The only problem that we have is we don't have enough footballs," said JV assistant coach Armand Cotnoir, noting that his team has an inordinate amount of talent on offense. Cotnoir said eight different players have scored touchdowns.
Plant City has scored at least 40 points on four occasions.
The Midget team has had only one day when it allowed more than a touchdown and just one game in which it scored fewer than 32 points.
Six teams make up the Gulf Coast Youth Football Conference, and four make the playoffs in each age group. Plant City returns home Oct. 16 to play the Wesley Chapel Cowboys.
Through six weeks of play in the Florida Youth Football & Cheerleading Association, the Turkey Creek Trojans were undefeated in both the Midget and JV age groups. Pinecrest was 6-0 in the Pee Wee division.
Turkey Creek will play at Pinecrest on Oct. 16. Three weeks remain in the association's regular season.
