Did RG3 brag about his influence over the Redskins' owner?
Any coaching candidate making his way through the car wash at Redskins Park over the next few weeks should beware that the job will require more than just answering to owner Dan Snyder. Robert Griffin III apparently now has influence over the franchise's future as well.
Griffin has "bragged to teammates" about his close relationship with Snyder and his influence over the direction of the franchise, according to Sally Jenkins of The Washington Post. Jenkins cites "insiders" in describing egotistical behavior by the quarterback, including Griffin campaigning for the offense to be styled after his skill set and engaging in intense finger-pointing sessions with wide receivers.
The report also indicates that Griffin has alienated some of his receivers as well as members of the offensive line with his actions, making team unity a tall order for whoever is tasked with leading the franchise going forward. Some players also expressed frustration over the ineffective offense throughout the season, and veteran Santana Moss even called out Griffin specifically at one point, chiding the quarterback for not taking more responsibility for the team's struggles.
Griffin became quite vocal with his opinions about the Washington Redskins' future in 2013, too, even cutting off all contact with head coach Mike Shanahan after the quarterback's benching late in the season. Griffin was rumored to have at least some input in Snyder's decision to fire Shanahan, which might mean he'll also have some say in who the Skins hire to lead the team next. Washington already has asked permission to speak with Cincinnati Bengals coordinators Jay Gruden (offense) and Mike Zimmer (defense), San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin, among others.
