Despite limited role, Rams' Welker relished chance to play again
The St. Louis Rams had the league's worst passing attack this season, so it's hardly a surprise that coach Jeff Fisher identified wide receiver as one of the team's top offseason priorities.
Despite the obvious need to upgrade the passing game, veteran Wes Welker does not figure to be back with the Rams. Signed midway through the season, the 34-year-old Welker manged only 13 catches for 102 yards and had a limited number of snaps in his eight-game run.
Welker had three receptions for 32 yards in his debut with the Rams, but he failed to top two catches or 16 yards in any of his last seven games. Still, he was pleased to get back on the field following a series of concussions with the Denver Broncos that left his career in limbo.
“Yeah, I was happy to get to play football again,” Welker said. “That was the No. 1 thing. Getting back out there, and being around the guys, and being in the locker room. And just being around football again. I missed it, and love being around the game.”
A five-time Pro Bowler who had more than 100 catches in five of his six seasons with the New England Patriots, Welker did have one noteworthy highlight when he became the 20th player in league history to reach 900 career receptions. The question remaining is whether Welker wants to continue playing.
“As long as I feel good and am having fun doing it, I’ll continue to do it,” Welker said. “We’ll just have to see how all that plays out.”
