Daily Dawg Tags: Week 3 may be best chance to win
Spanning the virtual globe to bring you the latest news about the Cleveland Browns and the NFL – these are your Daily Dawg Tags for Friday, Sept. 23.
The Cleveland Browns are indeed playing a game this Sunday, which may have been forgotten during the constant talk of injuries to players both young and old.
The Browns are set to take on the Miami Dolphins, led by Cody Kessler at quarterback. It is unfair to assume he will have a bad performance Sunday, but any success will come as a surprise. This is not a direct reflection of Kessler’s abilities, but rather the situation in which he is making his NFL debut.
He will be without both Corey Coleman and Josh Gordon, the team’s top two receivers, while John Greco will be filling in at center for the injured Cameron Erving. Those absences, along with being given one week to prepare as the starter, puts Kessler at a great disadvantage heading into Sunday’s game.
Kessler may surprise us all, so while we maintain some sense of optimism let’s take a look at the news surrounding the Browns and the rest of the NFL in today’s edition of the Daily Dawg Tags.
Cleveland Browns news:
Cleveland Browns: Miami game is best opportunity to win in 2016
For a second consecutive week, Berea has been buzzing due to roster moves and controversy. Unfortunately for the Cleveland Browns, little of this is positive. The team is entering Week 3 with an 0-2 record, following two losses in which the team appeared proficient in very few areas.
Browns vs. Dolphins: Q&A with Phin Phanatic
The Cleveland Browns will head to Florida on Sunday to face the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium. It will be the home opener for the Dolphins who, like the Browns, enter the contest with an 0-2 record under new head coach Adam Gase.
Corey Coleman out 4 to 6 weeks
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman is expected to miss at least a month after breaking his hand during practice on Wednesday. While that is obviously not great news, the silver lining is that the Browns top draft choice will not require surgery at this time and is expected to return for the second half of the season, according to the team.
Cody Kessler faces impossible task ahead
The Cleveland Browns have had a history of putting rookie quarterbacks on the field before they are ready, and the same is true again as Cody Kessler is set to start this Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
Cleveland Browns: Don’t expect a successful debut for Kessler (Factory of Sadness)
News surrounding the Cleveland Browns rarely has been positive for quite some time. That is no surprise and it is very unfortunate. Remember, the Browns have not always been as bad as they are and good teams will eventually play in NE Ohio again.
Rashard Higgins ready to take advantage of more playing time (Dawgs by Nature)
The Cleveland Browns provided an update Thursday morning, saying that wide receiver Corey Coleman is expected to miss 4-6 weeks as he recovers from his broken hand. For the next two weeks — until Josh Gordon returns in Week 5 — a couple of rookie receivers will have the chance to step up. The most likely candidate for an uptick in playing time is rookie receiver Rashard Higgins.
NFL news:
Vikings’ defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd undergoes knee surgery (FanSided)
Injuries have been a big part of the early season story for the Minnesota Vikings. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater (knee) went down with a major knee/ leg injury before Week 1, and running back Adrian Peterson (knee) and left tackle Matt Kalil (hip) are both potentially out for the season.
Start/Sit: Dolphins fantasy football preview Week 3 (Phin Phanatic)
The Miami Dolphins could simply get nothing going in the first half of last week’s loss against New England on either side of the ball. The game initially looked as though it would result in a blowout loss after New England pulled ahead 31-3 early in the third quarter. The Dolphins mounted a second half comeback, however, keeping it interesting before eventually losing 31-24.
NFL plans to play Vikings-Panthers in Charlotte (NFL.com)
The NFL issued a statement Thursday stating the league is planning to play Sunday’s game between the Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings in Charlotte, North Carolina, as scheduled. “We are planning to play the game as scheduled on Sunday,” the league said. “We are monitoring events in Charlotte and have been in communication with local officials and authorities, and both the Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings.”
