Cowherd: Tony Romo could play for the New York Jets next season (Video)
Radio personality Colin Cowherd thinks that Dallas Cowboys veteran quarterback Tony Romo could be playing for the New York Jets next season.
When 36-year old Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo injured his back in the team’s third preseason game of the year, many fans undoubtedly had flashbacks of last season. With Romo suffering two collarbone injuries that sidelined him for 12 total games in 2015, and the team ending the year with a 4-12 record, the Cowboys seemed destined to travel down a similar road again this season.
The one saving grace was the excellent play of fourth round draft selection Dak Prescott. The former Mississippi State quarterback was coming off one of the best rookie preseason showings in recent memory. Now that Prescott was at the helm of America’s Team, fans at least had a glimmer of hope.
Three weeks into the regular season, the Cowboys are 2-1 and Prescott is being touted as the future of the franchise. So what does that say about Romo’s future in Dallas? So far, everyone from the front office, to the coaching staff, and even Prescott himself are saying this is still Tony’s team. And once Romo feels healthy enough to return , that his place starting under center is assured.
But Prescott’s excellent play, and the fact he’s won more games than Romo’s three previous back-ups combined last season, has some wondering exactly when Dak’s ascension to the starting role will take place. At least one national pundit believes that change could take place as soon as the end of the year.
In a segment titled Colin’s 5 ‘Stranger Football Things’, Fox Sports’ radio personality Colin Cowherd predicted that Romo could be playing for a new team in 2017.
“Tony Romo to the New York Jets at the end of the year,” predicted Cowherd on his Fox Sports Radio and FS1 television show on Wednesday. “The Cowboys have moved on emotionally with Dak Prescott. Romo will come back, last long enough to give teams like the Jets…to sign him to a two-year deal. And Dak will still only be making $400K a year, rookie deal, allowing the Cowboys to eat some of Romo’s contract which makes it more attractive to the New York Jets.”
As outsiders watching Romo’s body slowly deteriorate over the past few seasons, it’s hard to imagine any team taking a chance on the aging veteran. For those that follow the Cowboys closely, we all understand how tough Tony is and what he means to the team. But we also know the player is often the last one to know when to quit. If Romo says he can still play, we’ll be the first to believe him. Unfortunately, his rash of injuries recently indicate the end is closer than most would like to admit.
Prescott has certainly been impressive. But his play hasn’t yet been at a level better than what a healthy Romo brings to the table. If the rookie quarterback can led the Cowboys to victories against the San Francisco 49ers, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Green Bay Packers in the next three weeks; then it may be time to consider not disrupting the team’s chemistry and hindering Prescott’s progress by bringing back Romo too quickly.
But as of now, Romo is still the heart and soul of this Cowboys’ club. It’s hard to see a scenario where Tony doesn’t go out on his own terms as a member of America’s Team. But we’ve seen it happen to legendary players before. I’m just not sure I can personally envision Romo in anything other than a Cowboys’ uniform. Can you?
