Colts fall in London to Jaguars, 30-27

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Indianapolis Colts fell to 1-3 after a disappointing effort in London against the Jacksonville Jaguars. A late rally wasn’t enough for the Colts and they lost 30-27.

Andrew Luck and the offense led three touchdown drives in the fourth quarter alone this afternoon. After a day of ineptitude, the Colts utilized a no-huddle in the fourth quarter with big results. Why they don’t do this throughout the game more often remains a mystery. But despite the late success, it wasn’t enough.

A quick back-and-forth between the two teams left the Colts down three with over two minutes left to play. The drive started out well and the Colts moved past mid-field. But on fourth-and-one Luck opted to pass instead of scramble for a first down but Dwayne Allen couldn’t haul in the routine pass.

The Colts simply ran out of time to get into field goal range and a desperation attempt feel short.

The same problems that have plagued this team for years reared their ugly heads. Poor execution early, bad game planning, and a distinct lack of tackling were problems all morning.

Luck finished the day completing 26-of-41 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. Luck saw six of his passes slip in and out of the hands of receivers (two by Allen alone). Luck also had an early interception off a tipped pass.

Luck’s favorite target of the day was T.Y. Hilton, who had seven receptions but for just 42 yards and a touchdown. Phillip Dorsett hauled in the other touchdown, his lone reception of the day off a 64 yard bomb.

The Colts will need to reconsider their offensive approach to avoid these painful slow starts. They can move the ball with ease, but only when they’re trailing. It puts unnecessary pressure on the defense and Luck to perform, and often leads to more failure. The good news is that the schedule is easy, at least for a week.

Up next, the Colts return to the State to host the Chicago Bears Sunday at 1:00 PM.
