Chiefs being bet heavily vs. Texans

Going into the week, the Houston Texans were growing favorites over the Kansas City Chiefs. Things have reversed course since.

Kansas City was originally a 1.5-point underdog going into Sunday at NRG Stadium against the Houston Texans. Throughout the week, the line climbed as high as 2.5, suggesting that these teams would basically be even if the game were to be played at a neutral site.

On Sunday morning, a glance at the lines shows some heavy betting on the Chiefs over the last 48 hours. In most sports books, the line has shrunk all the way to Houston being favored by a single point. Incredibly, Kansas City is actually favored by a point in one book, showcasing just how much the action has swung.

Considering the way the two teams looked in Week 1, this is a bit surprising. Kansas City did find a way to beat the San Diego Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium, but needed the biggest comeback in franchise history to do it. Vegas is basically saying it feels the Chiefs are much more of the team we saw in the second half as opposed to the absolute disaster that unfolded in the first 40 minutes or so.

Houston was able to beat the Chicago Bears, 23-14, and looked solid in doing so. J.J. Watt is back but clearly still feeling the effects of back surgery. However, Jadeveon Clowney and Whitney Mercilus looked very good, with the latter earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

If the Chiefs win this game, they are going to earn it. Houston isn’t a great team, but it’s a good team and one with revenge on its mind. Apparently, the bettors aren’t worried about any of that.
