Chicago Tribune's Pompei wins PFWA award

Chicago Tribune sports writer Dan Pompei has won the Dick McCann Award from the Professional Football Writers of America for his work covering the NFL for 28 years.

The 52-year-old Pompei is one of the 46 selectors for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and one of nine members of the hall's senior selection committee.

Pompei began his career writing for the school newspaper at Elmhurst College, from which he graduated in 1982. He eventually began covering the Bears for the Chicago Sun-Times in 1985, moved to The Sporting News in 1997, and joined the Tribune in 2007.

The McCann Award is given to a reporter who has made a long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage and is named for McCann, the first director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
