The St. Louis Rams didn't want to keep Austin Pettis.

That's fine by the Chargers. They'll be happy to find a roster spot for the former third-round pick if he keeps making plays.

"For me, I’m just trying to go out there and be as consistent as possible and gain the coaches' trust, and that’s just day in and day out," Pettis told ESPN's Eric D. Williams.

Mike McCoy and Co. has learned they can trust Pettis -- particularly near the red-zone. According to Williams, he's been the favorite goal-to-go target of a few Chargers passers.

One of those passers? Backup Kellen Clemens, who worked with Pettis during their time together in St. Louis. But Pettis is winning over the guy who starts ahead of Clemens on Sundays, too.

"He shows up on the tape when you’re going back through the film on one-on-ones and things. He’s a guy that’s physical and really has picked up the offense well."

Rivers' opinion means the world right now. Pettis is no lock to make the final roster, but if the quarterback likes what he sees, he'll stay.
