Cardinals running backs can carry load in wake of Ellington's injury

Head coach Bruce Arians revealed Andre Ellington has a sprained right knee, but has yet to rule him out for Week 2.

Should Ellington miss time, though, the Cardinals are well-equipped to survive in his absence.

Chris Johnson, signed in the offseason to provide running back depth, would likely take over starting duties for Ellington.

“I thought Chris looked good,” Arians said, via ESPN. “He’ll get more touches and we will feel very confident if he is our lead dog, and then David has been backing him up.”

Rookie David Johnson's role would see an increase in touches, both as a pass-catcher and runner out of the backfield.

For a Cardinals offense that ranked second-to-last in rushing yards per game, Week 1's performance via the ground( (4.8 yards per carry) was a positive sign.

Even without Ellington - if he is sidelined - the team has the two Johnson's ready to pick up the slack.
