Cam Newton (concussion) cleared to play on Sunday

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been cleared by an independent neurologist to play on Sunday against the Saints, the team announced on Saturday.

Newton missed last week’s loss to the Buccaneers with a concussion he sustained against the Falcons in Week 4.

The 27-year-old has taken several shots to the head this year, and some in his inner circle have reportedly told him to play more cautiously upon his return. Newton was concussed as he scrambled near the goal line.

He was seen riding a scooter without a helmet this week, but coach Ron Rivera told reporters he wasn’t concerned about it.
