During his post practice press conference, head coach Dirk Koetter announced the team captains for 2016 had been named.

The team captains are always a sense of pride, of accomplishment. To have your team, your coaching staff trust you as one of the essential leaders of 52 other men is an honor that is not easily earned. It takes a special breed of man to be a captain, to lead his squad to success. It’s not always the most talented player, but it is always one of the most respected. That being said, the men named captains for the 2016 Tampa Bay Buccaneers should come as no surprise.

Dirk Koetter was asked about captains during his press conference today, leading him to make the announcement;

“On defense, it’s Gerald McCoy and Lavonte David. On offense, Jameis Winston and Vincent Jackson. And on special teams, it’s Russell Shepard.

Those will be the five captains for the season that’ll have the ‘C’ on their chest, then we’re gonna have a weekly captain just based on what game it is. For this week it’ll be Joe Hawley.”

Vincent Jackson has been a captain every season of his Buccaneers’ tenure so there was no surprise there. Anyone who didn’t think Jameis would be a captain was only kidding themselves. McCoy and David were no-brainers. The surprise – if you can call it that – seems to be Russell Shepard. With Adam Humphries taking punt return duties, perhaps Shepard will be taking kickoffs as that role is still very much in question.

It will be interesting to see the rotational captain each week based on matchups but Hawley seems like a great choice to start the season. There was a little worry among Buccaneers fans about the center position as Hawley and Evan Smith seemed to be battling it out, but no one brings the nasty to the offensive line quite like Joe. Kwon Alexander also would’ve made a lot of sense this week given his performance in Atlanta last season after the tragic death of his brother.

What do you think Bucs fans? Did the players vote on the right guys to be their captain? Let us know in the comment section below!
