Browns vs. Ravens: QBs, scouts, inactives, live game thread
The Cleveland Browns are home today against the Baltimore Ravens and there is plenty of news swirling around the Browns.
The Cleveland Browns take the field today against the Baltimore Ravens in the home opener.
Rather than focusing on how the Browns can grab their first win of the season – and a division win at that – much of the pregame chatter has been on quarterbacks who will not be playing for the Browns.
First came a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Robert Griffin III will be out 10 to 12 weeks with his shoulder injury, which pretty much shuts Griffin down for the season.
No one should be surprised that Griffin did not make it through the season in one piece. But it is surprising that his time as the Browns starting quarterback looks to have lasted just a tick longer than Ty Detmer’s tenure.
In other news, Jason La Canfora at CBS Sports weighed in with a recycled story from last spring about the Browns letting some of their scouts go prior to the draft. It wasn’t a big story when it happened as scouts are routinely let go every year across the NFL, but La Canfora painted the move in more nefarious tones:
According to numerous sources with knowledge of the situation, several of the more seasoned scouts and evaluators the Browns parted with prior to the draft — an unusual time to release such employees — actually preferred Wentz to quarterback Jared Goff and believed him to be the greater pro prospect.
But the timing of their release raised eyebrows then and continues to generate chatter now given the high-profile way in which their quarterback decision has played out and the fact that the segment of personnel they let go were more pro-Wentz than others.
We’ll leave it up to you, Browns fans, to decide whether this is a big deal or not.
In news that actually impacts today’s game, the Browns announced that the following players will be inactive: defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun, defensive back Marcus Burley, linebacker Scooby Wright III, offensive lineman Shon Coleman, wide receiver Jordan Payton, defensive lineman John Hughes III and defensive lineman Gabe Wright.
For the Ravens, the inactives are: linebacker Elvis Dumervil, cornerbacks Jerraud Power and Will Davis, running backs Kenneth Dixon and Javorius Allen, offensive lineman John Urschel and defensive tackle Willie Henry.
A Sunday with the Browns means fans are going to have plenty to say once the game actually begins. We here at Dawg Pound Daily look to keeping the conversation going right here throughout the game.
So please comment on this post throughout the game to share your thoughts about what is taking place on the field. Just remember to keep it civil.
