Browns release QB Jake Delhomme

Published Jul. 27, 2011 6:44 p.m. ET

A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press the Browns will release Jake Delhomme on Thursday.

The person spoke anonymously because the Browns have not announced their plans.

The 36-year-old quarterback didn't play much in 2010 after the Browns signed him following his release by Carolina. He helped develop Colt McCoy, then a rookie who became Cleveland's starter.

Delhomme completed 93 of 149 for 872 yards, with two touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was 2-2 as a starter.

Delhomme was scheduled to make $5.4 million in base salary.

Delhomme led the Panthers to the 2003 NFC title; they lost to New England in the Super Bowl.

The story was first reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
