Bills' Corey Graham excited about making switch to safety
Making a position change after eight years at one spot is never easy, but that's exactly what Buffalo Bills cornerback Corey Graham is attempting to do. Graham is entering his ninth season in the NFL, his second with the Bills, and is being asked to make the move to safety this year. Not every player would be OK with being asked to change positions, but Graham is embracing the opportunity.
"It’s been fun, to be honest with you," Graham told the Buffalo News. "I’m looking forward to it. It’s like starting all over again, learning a new position, the nuances of it and all that. It’s like I’m a rookie all over again. So I’m excited about it. I want to see where it can take me.”
Graham will join a group of players competing for the starting safety spot opposite Aaron Williams. In that group is Duke Williams, Bacarri Rambo, and Jonathan Meeks. Graham, the most experienced of the group, is hoping he can earn himself a starting spot, much like his idol Charles Woodson did for the Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders.
"Most corners at some point in their career, you’re moving to safety if you’ve got any size to you," Graham said. "It can extend your career. You just want to play, you want to do whatever you can to help the team. At some point you might have to sacrifice a little bit, but in the long run it can be better."
Bills head coach Rex Ryan, a defensive guru, is happy -- yet unsurprised -- with Graham's willingness to make the move for the better of the team.
"It’s not surprising that he’s really taken to it," Ryan said. "He’s smart, and I think that’s obviously the prerequisite of that position."
