Bill Belichick has perfect solution for controversial sideline catches

Determining whether a catch was really a catch has been a hot topic in the NFL this season -- and a controversial one, too. So much so that the NFL formed a six-man committee to review the catch rule and possibly make changes to it. Sunday night's game between the New England Patriots and Houston Texans involved yet another controversial catch ruling along the sideline.

Running back James White appeared to come down with a great grab over a defender, and after it was ruled a catch on the field, it was overturned after further review. Though it didn't seem like there was inconclusive evidence that his heel came down out of bounds, it was ruled incomplete, to the surprise of Bill Belichick.

Belichick commented on the play on Monday, and has a way to fix controversial catches along the sidelines: put cameras giving angles along the boundaries. In typical fashion for Belichick, he gave a lengthy answer. Here's part of it, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.

Having cameras with better angles of the play would definitely help, but it wouldn't solve everything. In this particular case, it would have helped determine if White's heel did indeed come down out of bounds. It didn't change the outcome of the game as the Patriots still came away with the win, but it raises even more questions about the NFL's review process.

In particular the White play, it goes back to the whole issue of the angle of the camera and was his heel actually on the white? Or was his toe on the ground and his heel above the white? How close was it?

I think I'd just say what I've said many times before, because of the plays on the sideline, on the goal-line and on the end line, that the league ought to have cameras there. I don't think we should be too worried about how much it costs. If we need to raise money, we should raise money and get those set up so that on those type of plays we have an absolute down-the-line angle of the play and not, I would say, the angles I saw showing up on the screen -- which none of them were down the line and they were all coming from either behind or from the field or kind of the sideline.

Getting better camera angles seems like a good idea, and Belichick even offered to help raise money to fund it.
