Bears DT Sedrick Ellis retiring

Published Jul. 25, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

The Chicago Bears say defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis has decided to retire rather than report to training camp.

The Bears announced the move on Thursday. They are scheduled to begin practicing on Friday, but Ellis won't be there.

Taken with the seventh overall pick by New Orleans in 2008, he played five seasons with the Saints before signing a one-year deal with Chicago on July 12.

Ellis started all 16 games last season and recorded 36 tackles - 13 solo - and broke up one pass.
