49ers' Staley on ugly loss: 'We didn't bother to show up and play'

Left tackle Joe Staley pointed to a simple reason for the San Francisco 49ers' 24-10 loss at the Cleveland Browns.

“You can’t take anything lightly. We’re not in a position to take anything lightly," Staley told reporters. “We’re in a position where we have to play our (butt) off every week, and today we didn’t do that. It just felt like we didn’t bother to show up and play.”

The Browns entered Sunday's matchup with the league's worst record and mired in a seven-game losing streak, but they rolled up 230 yards rushing and 481 yards overall in stomping the 49ers. San Francisco scored a touchdown with under two minutes to play to make the final score respectable.

"We won last week because everybody played hard," 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks said in reference to last weekend's overtime victory at Chicago. "By us getting a win last week, maybe we got a little big-headed ... and thought that things were just going to happen."

Other teammates disagreed with the assessments by Staley and Brooks. Linebacker and leading tackler NaVorro Bowman termed the defeat "embarrassing" but not due to a lack of effort.

"I didn't overlook the Browns," Bowman said. "Johnny (Manziel) was coming back and You know their team was going to rally around him. We didn’t do the little things we needed to do today, and one was to keep Johnny in the pocket."

Center Daniel Kilgore also took umbrage with the notion that the team was not prepared to play. Kilgore played in his first game in 14 months Sunday following a lengthy rehabilitation from two surgeries on his broken leg.

“It’s a false comment," Kilgore said. "Every week, we’re mentally prepared. Coaches do a good job every week getting this team prepared. That’s a stupid remark.”
