49ers rookie cornerback hurt

Published Dec. 26, 2010 8:12 p.m. ET

San Francisco 49ers rookie cornerback Phillip Adams has been carted off with a left ankle injury on the kickoff return to start the second half.

The team said Adams would not return.

Adams, a seventh-round pick who has not started, was blocking on the kickoff Sunday against the St. Louis Rams. After the injury he was flat on his back for several minutes while medical personnel evaluated the injury.

The leg was immobilized in an air cast before Adams was loaded onto the cart.
