49ers Game review

Offense
RATING: ALERT VIEWER
Quarterback Alex Smith put together one touchdown drive of his own doing, a 91-yarder to end the third quarter. Running back Frank Gore popped off one run, a 64-yarder in the fourth quarter. Other than that, the offense was pretty much mucked up in the rain. Left tackle Joe Staley had his worst game of the year with two holds, one sack and two quarterback hits. Tight end Vernon Davis still can't get open downfield in double coverage. No turnovers on a wet day made up for all their shortcomings.
Defense
RATING: WILD APPLAUSECome on, Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell isn't that bad. The 49ers made him look that way with a pass rush that kept him uncomfortable, a run defense that allowed him no handoff relief and pass coverage that left no one open. Inside linebacker Takeo Spikes was a beast. Strong safety Taylor Mays nearly had two picks. And, a mix of linebackers took tight end Zach Miller out of the equation.
RATING: ALERT VIEWERC.J. Spillman signed with the team Wednesday, and made an instant impact with tackles on the first kick and punt returns of the game. Three special-teams penalties were bad, but not as bad as nine men on the field for a field-goal attempt - which forced the 49ers to call a timeout and was followed by a punt into the end zone.
RATING: ALERT VIEWEROffensive coordinator Mike Johnson delivered balance but still can't devise ways to get the ball deep to his speed receivers. Whatever defensive coordinator Greg Manusky called out there, it worked, and it didn't even require much blitzing. He schemed away the tight end and the deep throw, and the Raiders were done.
RATING: POLITE APPLAUSEHey, it's a win, and an 0-5 team can't get all picky about how they come. Beating a bad Raiders team by just a touchdown at home isn't much to hang a hat on, but it gives the 49ers a reprieve from another week of kicking rocks.
