49ers' Davis sustains concussion

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis and rookie safety Eric Reid each sustained concussions during Sunday's game against Carolina.

Davis was injured in the second quarter and taken to the locker room before halftime for evaluation. Then Reid went down for several minutes after a helmet-to-helmet hit on Mike Tolbert with 8:29 left in the third quarter. Coach Jim Harbaugh hurried out to the spot and watched closely, then Reid was helped off the field before being tested for a concussion.

Davis took a hard hit from Panthers safety Mike Mitchell with 7:19 left in the first half near the goal line on an incomplete pass targeted for him. The team announced early in the second half his evaluation revealed a concussion.

Davis had one catch for 2 yards Sunday, when San Francisco also lost No. 3 tight end Garrett Celek in the first quarter to a hamstring injury. Davis has 30 catches for 520 yards and seven touchdowns this season as one of Kaepernick's top options.

Reid had an earlier fumble recovery for his fifth takeaway in a standout rookie season that also includes three interceptions.

Both Davis and Reid - with his second of the season - could be in jeopardy for next Sunday's game at New Orleans.

Panthers linebacker Chase Blackburn did not return in the second half because of a foot injury.
