Timofey Mozgov won't sign contract extension with Cavaliers
Timofey Mozgov is woefully underpaid by NBA big men standards. He's in the final year of a contract that will pay him under $5 million for next season, but we won't be looking to sign an extension with the Cavaliers just yet.
Terry Pluto of Cleveland.com explains why:
"In four years, the salary cap may double. It's expected to rise about 30 percent in 2016, what I've called 'The Money Summer.'
"That's why Mozgov won't sign an extension right now. He'll play for $4.9 million and another solid season for the 7-footer could be worth more than $15 million a year in 2016.
"As a few agents have explained to me, 'A max contract now immediately becomes 30 percent less than the max by next summer. In 2-3 years, it's not anywhere close to the max.'"
Mozgov averaged career-bests in points and field-goal percentage after being traded to the Cavaliers in the middle of last season. There's no question that he's in line for a huge payday, but it's one that'll be even bigger if he waits for the salary cap to spike before signing a deal.
