Report: Magic, Fournier have discussed extension
With all of the money coming into the league over the next couple of offseasons, it's understandable why an extension-eligible player might choose to wait until free agency to sign his next deal. It's a simple matter of getting more money. Yet several players from the 2012 draft class have already signed extensions, most notably Michael Kidd-Gilchrist's recent deal. And Orlando Magic wing Evan Fournier could be the next, according to a report from Basketball Insiders.
The report states that Fournier and the Magic have had discussions on a contract extension, but that the looming increased cap is a factor:
"Sources close to the process say it is possible that Fournier and the Magic reach a deal before the end of training camp. Both sides seem to be talking the same kinds of valuation, the question is will Fournier take his money now or follow in the footsteps of teammate Tobias Harris and see if the market can push him higher than the Magic’s valuation?"
Fournier averaged 12.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 28.6 minutes per game for the Magic last season. He's yet to take a major step forward since a fairly impressive rookie season, but the coach turmoil he's experienced since then probably hasn't helped.
