Report: Cameron Payne met with the Celtics

Published Jun. 21, 2015 1:11 p.m. ET

Cameron Payne, the 6'2" scoring guard from Murray State, fractured his finger during a recent workout. But that didn't stop him from meeting the Boston Celtics late last week.

Payne is projected in most mock drafts as a lottery pick, making him the "best" prospect who's reportedly met with the Celtics so far, according to Draft Express.

He averaged 20.2 points and 6.0 assists per game last season, shooting 37.7 percent from deep, but Boston already has Marcus Smart, Evan Turner, Avery Bradley and Isaiah Thomas in its backcourt.

Payne duplicates a skill-set already in place, but the Celtics would still be wise to select the best player available, knowing it gives them more options on the trade market.

It's unclear whether they believe Payne is going to fall out of the lottery, or they have interest in moving up to select him.
