Report: Bulls interested in Alvin Gentry as successor to Thibodeau
The Chicago Bulls are locked into a dogfight, knotted 2-2 with the Cleveland Cavaliers in perhaps the biggest playoff series of the team's century.
As pressing as the present is, though, that doesn't mean that the team's front office doesn't also have their eyes on the future. Long-standing rumors that coach Tom Thibodeau is on his way out this summer have led to talk about who's in line to replace him, with Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg as the most frequently mentioned candidate.
Another name hits the wire today, however. Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders reports that Alvin Gentry, a top assistant of Steve Kerr's with the Golden State Warriors, and former lead man with Steve Nash's Phoenix Suns, has joined Hoiberg atop the Bulls' list.
"Sources peg Warriors assistant Alvin Gentry as a serious front runner," Kyler writes.
Some quick speculation suggests Gentry may have an unfavorable whisper in his ear, belonging to fellow top Warriors assistant Ron Adams. Adams was an assistant under Thibodeau and a long-time friend of the Bulls' current coach, and his exit from Chicago was not pretty. Would his tales of dysfunction discourage Gentry from taking the job?
Before we can answer any of these questions, though, we'll have to tune into Game 5 of Bulls-Cavs, tonight.
