Otto Porter is 'definitely' ready to play power forward
The Washington Wizards invested in a more modern roster this summer, adding outside shooters and versatile wing defenders who thrive in smaller units.
But they lost Paul Pierce, who came on as a lethal stretch four in the playoffs. Who will replace him? Otto Porter recently told Sirius XM Radio that he's perfectly capable:
“Definitely, because that’s who the NBA is transitioning, you know, to smaller lineups. So being able to stretch out as a four is going to be key, and that is something with our coaching we might end up doing. It’s definitely something I’ll be comfortable with.”
In order to have success as a stretch four, Porter needs to, you know, stretch the defense and create open driving/passing lanes for speedy ball-handlers like John Wall, Bradley Beal and Ramon Sessions.
He shot just 33.7 percent from deep last year, but flashed some necessary accuracy in the postseason, bumping up to 37.5 percent on 3.2 attempts per game.
That still isn't ideal, but Porter impacts the game in other ways. He's a great rebounder for his size and can defend more than a couple positions. Still, if he wants to close games at the four for Randy Wittman, Porter needs to prove he can hit open shots.
