Miami Heat forward Josh McRoberts frustrated with recurring injury issues

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Josh McRoberts, still recovering from a broken right foot, has yet to participate with the Miami Heat in training camp.

Since signing with the Miami Heat in 2014, Josh McRoberts has played in just 59 games over the last two seasons as he’s dealt with various injuries. He’s not lived up to the expectations the team had when they signed him away from Charlotte–where he averaged more than eight points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists a game on 36 percent shooting from three-point range–because he hasn’t been on the court enough to do so.

And though this was supposed to be a new, healthy season, it was revealed this week that McRoberts won’t be available for the start of training camp in the Bahamas. McRoberts, according to reports, broke his foot in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference semi-finals against the Toronto Raptors, and is still recovering.

Because Miami has yet to see a return on their investment (McRoberts signed a four-year, $22.6 million deal and has two years remaining), the 29-year-old power forward has been the subject of trade rumors in the last year. He’s also taken flack from a fan-base that has grown increasingly irritated with his recurring injury issues; something McRoberts openly addressed with reporters during camp.

“I’m a big white guy who gets hurt all the time. I wouldn’t like me either,” McRoberts said, via the Palm Beach Post.

“It’s not like a got hurt walking a dog. I got hurt trying to play for the Heat, trying to help the team win,” McRoberts said, via the Miami Herald. “I’ve had bad luck and I’ve tried everything I can to be healthy. If anybody is frustrated, it’s me.”

With Chris Bosh’s absence from the team, McRoberts has an opportunity to take the reigns of the power forward position as the only incumbent on the roster competing for the job.

Though this recent setback isn’t season-ending by any means (McRoberts should be available for the preseason), it’s concerning that his season isn’t getting off on the right foot.
