Don’t Underestimate Charlotte

“With these three (Kemba, MKG and Batum) as the focal point of both the offense and defense, the Charlotte Hornets are finding success. MKG and Batum are menaces on the defensive side of the ball and use their length and athleticism to their advantage. With MKG’s improving jump shot (still very much a work in progress), he is now more than just a slasher. When you combine that with Walker and Batum, the Hornets are causing problems for many opponents.” (sircharlesincharge.com)

The Charlotte Hornets are a legit threat this season. Many want to write them off as pretenders but this team has come to play and they are on a mission this year. With great coaching, the exceptional play of Kemba Walker, a commitment to defense, and well-rounded team play, Charlotte has what it takes to compete with any team in the league. They aren’t the Hornets’ teams from years ago and they should no longer be underestimated.

Jordan to Receive Medal of Freedom

“Charlotte Hornets Owner Michael Jordan was included in President Barack Obama’s list of recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom Wednesday. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals “who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors,” according to a press release from The White House. The awards will be presented to Jordan and 20 other recipients at the White House on November 22th.” (wcnc.com)

Only a handful of basketball-related people have ever received a Medal of Freedom and Hornets’ owner, Michael Jordan, will add to that list. MJ will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom alongside fellow NBA great, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar this year. The only other former-NBA player to receive the medal was Bill Russell and the other basketball related people to receive it were Dean Smith and Pat Summit. What an honor for Jordan who is one of the best and most influential basketball players of all-time.

Hornets and the NBA-Trump Hotel Dilemma

“A Hornets team spokesman told me Wednesday the team has stayed at Trump-brand hotels “in the past at various times” but is not scheduled to do so in the future. He did not elaborate.” (bizjournals.com)

While this may not be about basketball necessarily, it is topical and the Charlotte Hornets’ impact, as well as other NBA teams, goes much farther than just on the court. With the Dallas Mavericks, the Milwaukee Bucks, and the Memphis Grizzles announcing that they would no longer stay in the Trump hotels, the Hornets future with the hotels is unclear. While they may not plan to use them going forward, they weren’t a team that announced that they wouldn’t but the message from the spokesman pretty much gives an idea of the team’s sentiment looking ahead.
