Brooklyn Nets: Jeremy Lin's All-Star Charity Work

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Off the court, Jeremy Lin is heavily underrated as a philanthropist, giving back to the community whenever he can. Recently, this past summer, Lin signed a 3-year, $36 million contract, and he has made sure that – in addition to saving his money – he would use his salary to help those in need.

Background

As you may have heard, Jeremy Lin donated $1,000,000 to his alma mater back in October of this year. And Lin didn’t stop there. On Halloween, One Day’s Wages (ODW) announced its partnership with Jeremy Lin for the current, 2016-2017 NBA season. On their website, they describe themselves as an organization that is a “grassroots movement of people, stories, and actions to alleviate extreme global poverty.”

The charity’s goals fit Lin accurately, considering that he has seen much adversity in his tough journey to make it to NBA stardom. He’s had to prove himself all the way, and starting his career as an un-drafted player has motivated him to work even harder on the court. This work ethic, evidently, has translated off the court and can be seen in every part of his life.

Impact and Goals

Lin, through One Day’s Wages, hopes to make a difference by supporting the Girl’s Empowerment Fund of the organization because he believes that he can bring light to this issue and facilitate change, given his platform and resources as both a prominent NBA player and a dedicated community activist.

He’s primarily interested in giving more opportunities to women in education by providing tuition and supplies, and he hopes to build a better future for those in need. Lin wants women to “pursue their passions in the workforce” as well as have the opportunities to explore different career paths, further emphasizing his position on the empowerment of women.

Bringing it Back to Brooklyn

On the court, Jeremy Lin hopes to donate wages from one of his games, and he hopes to donate $100 for every 3-pointer he makes this season. The attitude that he possesses is reflective of the character and morals that this young Brooklyn Nets squad has. Hopefully, as a leader on the team, he can influence the other players to give back, promoting the overall positivity that resonates with the new Nets culture.
