Becky Hammon makes more history, will coach in All-Star Game

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 12:04 a.m. ET

With San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich named head coach of the Western Conference All-Star team, and with two of his own players making the team, it’s only natural he would bring with him assistants familiar with his coaching style, and with the Spurs players.

But when he did the expected on Thursday, he also made history.

It is the latest trailblazing move for Becky Hammon, who was hired by the Spurs prior to the 2014-15 NBA season, making her the first woman to be a full-time assistant coach any of the four major North American professional sports. A year later, she one-upped that by leading the Spurs’ summer league team to the Las Vegas Summer League championship.

Along with Pop, Hammon will be joined by Spurs players Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge on the West sideline in Toronto on Feb. 14.
