Yankees OF Beltran has bone spur in elbow, may need surgery

NEW YORK (AP) Yankees right fielder Carlos Beltran has a bone spur in his right elbow that could require surgery if a pain-relief shot does not ease the symptoms.
Beltran was given a Cortisone injection Monday night, shortly after he felt a sharp pain taking swings in a batting cage during the Yankees' 9-7 loss to the Mets.
The eight-time All-Star said Tuesday that if the shot doesn't work in two or three days he could be headed for surgery. He asked about having a second shot if the first doesn't work.
Alfonso Soriano is starting in right field Tuesday against the crosstown rivals because Ichiro Suzuki is out a second straight day with a sore lower back.
The Yankees placed setup man Shawn Kelley on the DL with a back injury, retroactive to May 7, and New York called up outfielder Zoilo Almonte from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to help fill in for the two injured veterans.
