Yankees Gleyber Torres Not Ready for Majors Just Yet
Let's pump the breaks on the idea of Gleyber Torres coming up and fixing the New York Yankees woes at third base. Al Pedrique, his current manager, says the prospect is not ready.
Given the success that the New York Yankees youngsters have had this season, it is natural to look at Gleyber Torres as the answer at third base. After all, Chase Headley, after a hot start to the season, has continued to be a disappointment. His .230/.310/.343 batting line heading into yesterday's action is not exactly anything to inspire confidence.
However, it is time for us to pump the breaks when it comes to Torres' promotion. According to his manager with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Al Pedrique, Torres just is not ready yet. Given that he is a 20 year old just getting his first look at the AAA level, that assessment would certainly make sense.
Pedrique has specific reasoning for his concerns about Torres, citing his defense as the reason why the Yankees top prospect is not ready. Primarily a shortstop throughout his minor league career, Torres is getting his first extended action at second and third. With ten games at second, and 14 at the hot corner, his defense is going to be a work in progress for some time.

Those defensive shortcomings are likely to be an issue for some time. As Torres learns both positions, and should see more time at third going forward, there are going to be some bumps along the way. It is certainly better that he iron those issues out in AAA than in the majors.
While Torres works on his defense, his offense is starting to come around. A recent 9-27 stretch has brought his batting line to a respectable .254/.368/.381 clip, and he is starting to flash a bit of power. However, Torres is still striking out far too often, with 23 whiffs in 76 plate appearances with the RailRiders.
Gleyber Torres will get his chance with the New York Yankees. Just do not expect it to be any time soon, as he still has holes in his game to work on.
