Teheran to fill in for Hudson against Blue Jays
Julio Teheran will be recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett to fill in for Tim Hudson for the Braves on Sunday against the Blue Jays.
Hudson has bone spurs in his left ankle and said Saturday he had a cortisone shot Friday after his attempt to throw in the bullpen ''wasn't too good.''
''It's just some bone spurs I've had for years,'' Hudson said.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Hudson may start Wednesday against the Yankees. Brandon Beachy, currently scheduled to pitch Wednesday, would be pushed back one day.
Teheran, the Braves' top prospect, is 5-2 with a 3.15 ERA in 11 starts at Gwinnett. He pitched a seven-hit complete-game shutout, allowing only one run, in his last start against Charlotte.
Gonzalez said Teheran has been told he will make only one start before returning to Gwinnett. Gonzalez said the Braves then will add another reliever.
''Teheran has pitched well to earn that,'' Gonzalez said. ''It will be good for him and good for us to see him pitch.''
Teheran was 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in five games, including three starts, for Atlanta in 2011.
The Braves announced after Saturday's 5-2 win over Toronto they optioned catcher J.C. Boscan to Gwinnett to open a roster spot for Teheran.
Boscan was recalled from Gwinnett on May 26. The team needed three catchers when backup David Ross was held out with a right groin strain and starter Brian McCann was recovering from an illness.
Meanwhile, first baseman Freddie Freeman is starting Saturday, his first start since he bruised his left index finger Wednesday. He pinch hit and remained in the game Friday.
Gonzalez said Chipper Jones, who was playing his second rehabilitation game with Class A Rome on Saturday as he recovers from a bruised left calf, could come off the disabled list Monday. He was placed on the 15-day DL on May 26.
''We want him to build up some kind of stamina,'' Gonzalez said.
