Kershaw: Harvey should start ASG

Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who leads the majors with a 1.89 ERA, endorses the idea of Mets righty Matt Harvey starting the All-Star Game at Citi Field.

“He should,” Kershaw told FOXSports.com. “There’s no reason, especially if it’s in New York, that he shouldn’t start. That’s what the fans will want. I’ve got no problem with that.”

Harvey, fourth in the majors with a 2.27 ERA, will pitch in front of National League All-Star manager Bruce Bochy on Monday night when he starts for the Mets against the Giants at AT&T Field.

The Mets are off Thursday, so Harvey’s next scheduled start would be Sunday, potentially eliminating him from consideration to start the All-Star Game. Starters who pitch on the Sunday before the ASG can throw no more than one inning in the game, according to baseball’s collective-bargaining agreement.

Harvey, however, also could pitch Saturday on regular rest if the Mets reworked their rotation — something that shouldn’t be an issue for the team, which is 11-1/2 games out of first place in the NL East.

Kershaw produced another brilliant performance on Sunday, allowing one run in eight innings in the Dodgers’ 4-1 victory over the Giants.

He could be the first left-hander with a sub-2.00 ERA at the All-Star break since Randy Johnson had a 1.80 ERA for the Diamondbacks in 2000 (minimum 100 innings), according to STATS LLC. His final start before the break is scheduled to be Friday at Dodger Stadium against the Rockies.
